What to Expect at Your First Acupuncture Appointment

Your Guide to a Calm, Comfortable, and Healing Experience

If you’ve never had acupuncture before, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure. Will it hurt? What’s involved? How should you prepare?

At Natural Relief in Liverpool, Sydney, we’re here to make sure your first session is gentle, informative, and deeply supportive. Our approach blends traditional Chinese medicine with modern clinical care, so you feel confident and cared for from the moment you arrive.

Before Your Appointment

We recommend you:

  • Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before your session (don’t come on an empty stomach)

  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing so we can access arms, legs, and abdomen easily

  • Bring any relevant medical reports, test results, or scans (optional but helpful)

  • Arrive a few minutes early to relax and settle in

If you’re taking medication or have a specific health concern, we’ll talk through it during your consultation.

Your Initial Consultation

Your first appointment includes a full consultation where we explore:

  • Your main concern (pain, digestion, skin, hormones, stress, etc.)

  • Medical history and any previous treatments

  • Sleep, digestion, energy, emotions, and menstrual health (if relevant)

  • Tongue and pulse diagnosis — key tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine

This helps us understand your body’s patterns so we can personalise your treatment safely and effectively.

The Acupuncture Treatment

After the consultation, you’ll lie comfortably on a treatment table — either face up or face down depending on your condition.

We then insert ultra-fine, sterile needles into specific acupuncture points. Most people feel a light sensation — like a gentle tap, tingle, or warmth. Many clients find the experience deeply relaxing and even fall asleep.

Each needle stays in for 20–30 minutes, depending on your treatment plan. During this time, you’ll be left to rest in a calm, quiet space.

Other Therapies That May Be Used

Depending on your condition, your treatment may also include:

  • Cupping therapy – to release tension and improve circulation

  • Moxa (moxibustion) – warming the body to move blood and Qi

  • Gua sha – to stimulate lymphatic flow and reduce inflammation

  • Jojoba-based oils – especially in facial or skin treatments

  • Chinese herbal medicine – if suitable for your pattern (optional and discussed in session)

We only include what’s appropriate for you and always explain each step clearly.

After Your Treatment

You may feel:

  • Calm, relaxed, or even a little sleepy

  • Lighter or looser in areas that were tight or painful

  • Slight tenderness at needle sites (temporary and normal)

To support your healing, we recommend:

  • Drinking plenty of water

  • Avoiding intense physical activity or caffeine immediately afterward

  • Taking it easy for the rest of the day

Your practitioner will discuss your follow-up plan, which may include weekly or fortnightly sessions depending on your goals.
